Jörðgarð  - Work in Progress

Starting today, you'll be able to drop by here and see the status quo of the various parts of the campaign setting as they're going together.  Unless we specifically say otherwise, nothing is in a final state.  With each item, we'll let you know what the status is, and we'll update with new versions of the drafts as they become available.

All material that is available for download is released under the Open Game License, Version 1.0a.  The license terms define the following trademarks as Product Identity and prohibit your use of the material together with these trademarks:  Jörðgarð, Joerdhgardh, Dungeons Daring, Vintyri, Why Pay to Play? and Steigerwald EDV.  Other commercial and private uses are allowed under the OGL.

Regular downloads below contain some of the current editable maps in Fractal Mapper 8 FMP format.  The JPG versions are uneditable flattened maps.

As Our World Turns - Current March 2010

Status:  Advanced Draft

FM8 Download:  The FM8 version of this map will be available for downloading when they location names are added.

This map will stay at the top of this page.  It always will show you the current working version of the Western Hemisphere.  However, build numbers will not increase by one.  Each time we revise a map of the hemisphere, it will get a new build number, but only those builds that are new working versions will be posted here.  Fractal Mapper 8 in either the full version or the free trial version is necessary to open the FM8 versions of these maps.  For more information on FM8 go to http://www.nbos.com .

The next step with this map of the hemisphere is to add geographical location names.  The final version will have links on many of those names.  A mouse click on a name with a link automatically will open the map of that location for Fractal Mapper 8 users.

FallenLands.jpg

The Fallen Lands will be one of the key adventuring areas in the first Jörðgarð products.  In mythology, the path of the northern gods known as the Æsir can be traced from Thrace in Eastern Europe and Asia Minor northwestward across Europe until reaching Scandinavia and finally Iceland, where the Elder and Prose Eddas were written.  The name Æsir comes from Ása, the old Icelandic name for Asia.

A similar migration also takes place in the history of the Jörð.  After the migration of Óðinn and the other Æsir deities to Miðgarð, what remains of the original Æsir empire falls in the greatest wars ever known in the history of the Jörð.  The enemy is the host of Darkness, an army of powerful, undead draugs and their orc warriors.  Neither side wins this war.  Both armies are for the most part destroyed, with the survivors retreating to their own areas.

Much of what was the Æsir Empire is in ruin, crossed at various times by hardened men, orcs and draugs.  The outer areas include the Dreadlands, which are the home of the most powerful surviving draug lord; the Barrow Mountains, a state enslaved to vampire rulers; the Vígríð Plain, claimed by the fire giants of Muspell, and Slovánska, a border human realm populated by a fólk that left the Æsir fold long before Óðinn's migration to Miðgarð.  And then there also are the sizeable bands of Æsir rangers and wizards who live as nomads in the eastern remnants of their empire, intent upon not letting the draugs and orcs claim by default would they could not gain in battle.

The map above is far from finished, and many changes have yet to be made.  Still, it has become a fairly solid working draft.

This town of 600 is in the land of Slovánska, a former part of the Æsir empire that now borders on the lands of ruin.  The town's name is the translation in the Slovánski language of the earlier Æsir name Óðinnshús, which means Óðinn's House.  The castle above town was the seat of the god king before Óðinn's migration to Miðgarð.  The town is a gateway for adventure in the ruined lands and also one of the few places outside the ruins where the Æsir rangers of the north come.  When they travel there, they stay in Óðinn's abandoned castle.  They have no competition from the Slovánski who live in the town.  The Slovánski fear the castle.

There probably will be few factual changes in this map, but some substantial technical improvement still is planned.

Regarding Jörðgarð Maps - Current March 2010

Although it's not the case with all draft maps that will be shown here, the more important Jörðgarð maps will be released with links and with the multi-resolution techniques offered by Fractal Mapper 8.  What does that mean to the game master?

Taking the western hemisphere map above as an example, you'll have the ability with the final version of the map to click place names with the mouse, which will open a regional or local map of the location clicked.

In addition, you will be able to use FM8 to zoom in on specific areas of your map, and the resolution will be changed to offer the best possible appearance at various zoom levels.

These techniques are not available at this time in the maps described above, but they will be incorporated.
